What is a Pixie?
Pixies are the helpers of the mighty Faeries of Neopia, and they have come to rest in a magical gathering within the Orphanage grounds! They were sent by the Faeries to perform random acts of kindness, known as Pixie Deeds, in hopes that they will help us in our cause.
What is the Pixie Gathering?
The Pixie Gathering is a wondrous place for Pixies and pets alike. It's where the tiny flying wonders post their Pixie Deeds and communicate with their leaders, the Pixie Royals. It's also where members who have received Pixie gifts go and post their thank yous!
The Pixie Gathering also has a lot of interesting information that you should read before becoming a pixie! Particularly important are the Royal Announcements thread where Pixie Royalty will post important updates and the Royal Court where you can ask pixie-related questions. While you're reading the announcements you can scroll down and visit the Pixie Hall of Fame where some of our best pixies, both past and present, have been spotlighted for their magnificent deeds!
How do I become a Pixie?
Simple!
1) Register as a Pixie when first starting.
2) Perform a Pixie Deed within a week of registering.
3) Start your own Pixie Thread to tell us about your Pixie Deeds. Yes, Pixies like to brag, but we think they deserve to. It also encourages others to become Pixies and lets us recognize all the wonderful little givers in the Orphanage!
Once you've performed your first Pixie Deed, you'll be added to the usergroup but remember that to remain a Timely Pixie you'll need to perform Pixie Deeds once every week. If you become inactive, you'll be removed from the Timely Pixie usergroup.
What's the deal with Pixie Names and Themes?
When you become a Pixie, you get to pick a pixie name and a theme. This can be anything from "Martha the Random Pixie" (who gives completely random items depending on her mood) to "Darkfest the Zesty Lightning Pixie" (who only gives dark or lightning-related items). As you can imagine, Random Pixies - by both theme and name - are fairly common and generic (though no less appreciated) whereas something like a Zesty Lightning Pixie would be much more unique and 'owned' by the Pixie who invented it.
The Pixie Royalty cannot protect generic names like "Random Pixie" because it is common, but a name that's more unique like Darkfest's would be protected. That means that a new pixie can't come to the Gathering and call themselves "Artemis the Zesty Lightning Pixie" or "Martha the Zesty Lightning Pixie" because that name was created by and belongs to Darkfest.
Please note that Pixie Royalty won't ask any pixie to change their name unless the original creator of that name or theme specifically asks us to do so. We don't feel it's necessary to moderate pixies about their names if the original pixie is no longer active or doesn't mind about sharing the name. If you do mind that someone's using your name or theme, however, don't hesitate to PM us, letting us know which pixie is using your name with a link to their thread.
Can I change my Pixie Name or Theme?
In short, yes! If you're bored with the old name or realised your theme is too limited, you can easily change them by editing your pixie thread. Just be sure to let Pixie Royalty know if you're changing your name so they don't overlook you or get confused while doing their rounds.
If you'd like to start over completely with a new pixie thread, that's fine too! Remember, you're only allowed one pixie thread in the Gathering at a time, so it's important to let the Pixie Royalty know what's going on so they can delete your old thread. They'll leave your thread until you've copied everything you need into your new one, but please make sure you let them know when you're finished so they don't accidentally mod you.
What is a Pixie Deed?
A Pixie Deed, also known as a Pixie Visit, is when a Pixie gives a member of TNO a gift. This could be someone you've noticed helping out around TNO, a foster parent you'd like to help out, or anyone you'd like to visit as long as they're a member of TNO.
Pixie Deeds should be performed once a week (though we're not going to kick you out of the pixie gathering if you accidentally miss a week or two! ) and you should be giving items worth at least 1000 neopoints. This means that for every person you pixie, whatever you give them should be worth at least 1000 neopoints.
Please remember that junk items (anything worth less than 300 neopoints) are not allowed, it's just not very nice to receive something like that.
To make things a bit clearer, here's a couple of examples:
1) I have two items that are both worth 500 neopoints. I can give both of the items to one person, but I can't split them up and give them to two separate people then claim that as my 1000 neopoints pixie visit.
2) I have the above two items, both worth 500 neopoints, plus another item that's only worth 10 neopoints. I can't give someone those two 500 neopoint items and then tack on the junk item just because I want to, not even if it's part of a joke or they've asked for it in their wishlist. Pixie deeds should be special, so if you really want to give someone an item worth less than 300 neopoints, don't post it on your pixie thread.
Don't worry, you can always spend more than 1000 neopoints, but it is the minimum you should spend per person per week. If you don't want to give items, donations of neopoints are acceptable Pixie Deeds as well.
Once you've performed a Pixie Deed, remember to post about it in your thread so that the recipient(s) know who to thank. Also, you can (but don't have to!) PM them or neomail them to let them know the items that suddenly appeared in their inventory were from a Pixie.
Can I give cash donations instead of items?
Yes. We encourage you to contact the person you've pixied, however, as cash donations aren't as obvious as pixie gifts are, and please remember that the same minimum-neopoint rules apply to neopoint gifts as well as items, so you aren't allowed to send less than 1,000 neopoints per person.
What is a Pixie Thread?
A Pixie Thread is, quite simply, a forum topic created and maintained by you. These threads belong in the Pixie Gathering and are a way for recipients of gifts to know who to thank. They're also a way for pixies to show off their deeds and for Pixie Royalty to know who to spotlight.
Your thread doesn't have to be really elaborate or colourful but there are rules for what you need to include for each Pixie Deed:
1) The name of the recipient, either neoname or forum name
2) The full name of the item sent or the amount of neopoints donated
3) No double posting - if you make multiple visits in one day, use the edit button
That's it! You can include images if you like but they aren't essential, nor do you have to include the cost of items individually or in total. The only time you must include the value of the gift is when you've donated neopoints instead of sending an item.
It's perfectly fine to be more creative as well if that's what you'd like, but if you don't have a lot of time, don't worry about it. The Deeds speak for themselves.
What are the rules of the Pixie Gathering?
There are some rules to remember when in the Gathering on top of the ones mentioned in the rest of this FAQ:
- Only TNO members can become Pixies
- Pixies should only send gifts to TNO members. If you'd like to give gifts to other neopets friends that is of course fine for you to do on your own, but they don't qualify as Pixie Visits and shouldn't be posted in your Pixie Thread
- You're only allowed to have one Pixie Thread
- Please don't post general questions in the Pixie Gathering, this area is for Pixie threads only
- Only post in a Pixie Thread if it belongs to you or you're there to say thank you
- Don't post about Pixie Visits in other areas of the forums (eg. if you want to pixie someone who was just promoted, don't post on the Promotion Celebration thread. If you're concerned they won't realise they were pixied or why, feel free to PM them or send them a neomail)
- Don't double post - if you make multiple Pixie Visits in the same day, please use the edit button
- If you use images such as dolls made on dollmakers (eg. The Doll Palace), please make sure you credit them with a link to their site
Can I give a themed item with my pixie gifts?
Certainly. Themed items are items that match your Pixie Theme and are sent along with the pixie gift. For instance, the Bottled Faerie pixie might send a bottled faerie every pixie visit while the Tomato Pixie might send a Cheery Tomato Plushie with every gift.
Themed items are the only junk items a pixie is allowed to send. However, the item must be the same every week (otherwise it's not really a theme ).
What qualifies as a 'junk' item?
Anything that sells on the shop wizard for less than 300 neopoints, including items you might think are cute or that the person wants. This rule is in place because a number of people have been upset in the past by finding cheap items in their inventory and Pixies are meant to give gifts in appreciation. The only time a Pixie can give junky items is if the item is part of their Pixie Theme. For instance, retired Queen Ily used to steal an item from someone's shop, leaving a pile of dung to say they'd been pixied.
Please don't just toss random junk and call it a theme item, however. The idea of a theme is a continuous thing, not something that changes every week.
Who should I Pixie?
You can either visit a random member of the Guild and send them a gift, or you can let members post on your thread with requests. The choice is yours but don't rely solely on requests and nominations. Get out there and find those worthy members, there are plenty of them!
Good places to look are the Hall of Champions, Adoption Halls and anywhere on the forums. Keep your eye out for helpful members and show them they're appreciated as only Pixies can.
If you want people to request or post nominations on your thread you need to make it explicitly clear that it's ok for them to do so because normally it's not allowed for people to post like that on a pixie's thread and they could be moderated for it.
Can I give art/graphics out as my Pixie Deed?
Yes and no. We have a policy of each pixie visit costing at least 1,000 NPs, and because it is against the rules to set a price on art/graphics, that isn't possible. However, you can make a pixie visit with a legitimate gift worth at least 1000 neopoints and send art with it.
What happens if I get confused and mess up and now the Pixie Royalty have posted a note on my thread?
Don't panic! Everyone makes a mistake now and then. If you have any questions about what the problem was, contact one of the Pixie Royalty for clarification. If it all makes sense, then you just need to fix the problem.
For example, if you forgot to post an item name, just add it back in with the edit button. If your pixie gifts were under the neopoint limit, send another gift and edit your post to include it. Once the problem's been fixed, you can contact the Pixie Royalty asking for permission to remove the note if you like.
Who are these Pixie Royals everyone keeps talking about?
Well shockingly enough a lot of people don't know about the Monarchy that exists within TNO, but after reading this FAQ you will have no excuse to not know about her highness the Pixie Queen GetxthexPoint and her heir the Pixie Princess Terra.
These two lovely ladies flit about the Pixie Gathering doing good deeds as pixies themselves while also working to keep the Gathering in tip top shape and making sure that all rules are followed. But don't worry, they're very nice pixies and rarely have to do anything mean or harsh. Of course, that might have something to do with the exceptional quality of pixies we have who rarely do anything wrong and are always very good about fixing things when an error is made!
Anyway, these lovely Pixie Royals aren't the kind of gals who just sit on their thrones and look pretty! They're out there every day making sure that all is going well and planning newer, bigger, better and more exciting events for their royal pixie subjects!
No doubt you'll see them flying around any moment now and they certainly look forward to welcoming any new pixies to the Gathering while honoring their more crochety and cantankerous (but entirely lovable) older pixies!
And if your question has not been answered here, the Pixie Royals hold court every day here so that people can post with any questions, ideas or concerns! The Pixie Royals love to hear from their subjects so feel free to stop by any time court is in session or to send them a PM!
If you'd like to find out about past Pixie Royalty, why not read The History of the Pixie Queens?
What is an Uber Pixie?
Uber-Pixies are, of course, uber special. Uber Pixies provide your pets with quests to complete for a reward! These quests are random and can happen at any time.
A more scholarly explanation of what an Uber Pixie actually is would sound something like this . . . "The word über comes from the German language. During the late 1990's, über became a hip, trendy synonym for super; i.e. übercool - supercool."
Uber Pixies are not a new type of Pixie… no! They are from a very old and distinctive line of Pixies in TNO. At one time, there were many Uber Pixies… each with a very distinctive quest. Even our founder Divisor was an Uber Pixie!
Now, there are many different types of Uber Quests and lots of neat things to learn about Uber Pixies, so if you'd like more information you should read the post about them in our Announcements thread!
You should also know that they are led by a most wonderful and magical person known as the Uber Pixie Leader. We have it on good authority that this person is actually the lovely Kristle, but reports could not be confirmed at the time that this FAQ was posted.
There are currently four Uber Pixies and they all have threads on their special Uber Pixie Quest Cloud! So if you'd like to see if there is an Uber Quest waiting for someone just like yourself, why don't you check out these threads: Firefly's The Uber Shenkuette Pixie, Kristle's Symbia's Forbidden Hideaway, Kez's Uber Kitchen Quests and Snuglow's Antrim's CSI Quests
How do I become a Pixie if I'm under 13?
Under 13s are not given the "Give to a Neofriend" option, which is the normal method of pixieing someone. However, that doesn't mean you can't be a Pixie!
Put the gifts in a trade and contact the intended recipient either by PM or neomail to let them know there are gifts waiting for them. Give them a link to the trade, and ask them to bid a junk item (barbed wire, pile of dung, etc). Once they've made their bid, you can click accept and they'll receive your gift.
This is also a method Pixies can use if they intend to send lots of items and will save them some time clicking. However, if you have not received a response within a week, and you don't have space in your inventory to make another Pixie visit, feel free to cancel the trade and put the items back in your Safety Deposit Box. At this point, you also might want to send a second neomail or PM as a friendly reminder. If the intended recipient should contact you after that, you can set the trade up again. If you've received no response within a month, I think it's safe to say you won't be hearing from them, and you can use those items to Pixie someone else instead.
However, you might not want to post your Pixie Deed in the Gathering until the person has actually received the gift. And if you post it before the person receives the gift, remember to edit it if the person never collects the gift. It wouldn't be good after all to have a pixie thread full of Pixie Deeds that no one ever received!
As pixies we are not normally allowed to place the burden on the person being pixied to pick up the items, but if you're under 13 and have no other way to pixie this is definitely a good option for you!
What do I do if the item log returned an item?
In June 2007, Neopets activated the item event log, a tool that poses a couple of problems for Pixies. How are we meant to pixie someone if they can reject the item or, if they don't log in for a couple of days, don't even know they were pixied because the item was returned?
There's not a lot we can do about it except to go on as we always have and hope for the best. As with pixies who are under 13 and have to use trades, pixie visits are more reliant on the recipient doing their part. If for some reason an item is returned to you, try sending it again with a neomail or private message to the recipient letting them know they're being pixied. If it's still returned to you, there's not much you can do except send another note to say the gift is still available if the recipient wants to claim it. If they don't after a month or so, it's probably safe to say you can use it for someone else.
If the gift is never received, please make sure you edit your post to say so, or wait until you know a gift has arrived before posting about it for the same reason that under 13s shouldn't post their pixie deeds until their trades are accepted - it wouldn't be good to have the Gathering full of gifts that never made it to their intended recipient.
What if I just want to give out gifts occasionally but don't want to commit to the requirements of being a pixie?
In the past we've had people for instance who maybe were in the process of saving for something and so couldn't afford to pixie more than once a month, or we've had people who just like to be more casual and don't like posting on a thread everytime they give a gift, etc. That's totally fine and we recognize that pixieing isn't for everyone.
If that's the case, you're free to create a thread in Moods where you can list the random gifts you give to people. Alternatively, you can just give people gifts on their wishlists or you can give people gifts and not post about it at all. It's up to you what you do but you won't be a pixie unless you follow the few rules of the Pixie Gathering.
What should I do if I've been inactive for a while and want to come back to being a pixie??
First off, don't worry! Pixies for various reasons often become inactive and then come back. If you want to come back all you have to do is go find your old thread (or create a new one if you want) and start pixieing again. If your thread has been locked b/c you've been inactive for so long just PM Pixie Royalty and we'll unlock it for you! If you can't find your thread feel free to contact us as well and we'll try and help you find it, but realize that if your thread only had a few posts on it it may have been deleted to save server space.
After you've done that, you'll just want to verify whether you're still in the Timely Pixie Usergroup or not. You can do this just by checking your profile. If you are still in it (say you were only gone for a week or two and we were giving you the benefit of the doubt ) then you can just go about your business. If you're not in the usergroup anymore, you'll need to re-post in the Pixie Registry to let us know that you're back and need to be re-added to the usergroup.
What is Pixie Camp?
To avoid being removed from the Pixie's usergroup if you have to stop pixieing for a while, and to avoid having your thread locked or deleted, you can go away to pixie camp. This just means editing your Pixie Thread's topic title to include the phrase "Away at Camp" and posting to the thread to explain why so that the Pixie Royalty know you won't be pixieing for a while and that you aren't just slacking.
What is the Pixie Spotlight?
The Gathering is full of wonderful, generous and creative pixies and to show their appreciation, Pixie Queens of the past came up with the Pixie Spotlight. Once a month, a new pixie is chosen and his or her thread is 'stickied', which pins it to the very top of the Gathering. Additionally, spotlighted pixies are featured on TNO's website and are entitled to use special graphics, as well as receiving a congratulatory note from the Pixie Royalty.
There are no set criteria for being spotlighted but the Pixie Royalty generally look out for active pixies who've been a part of the Gathering for a few months and are either generous, dedicated or long-time pixies (or all three! )
What is the Pixie Appreciation Contest?
The Pixie Appreciation Contest (also known as the PAC), as of 2008 has been ReMiXeD, but it's still one of the Pixie Royalty's favorite ways to show their appreciation for the wonderful pixies they watch over. The original PAC required people to post their pixie deeds each month in order to get tickets. But the new ReMiXeD version is a lot easier to enter! There are now two ways you can win - either by pixieing someone with the "Special Pixie Present" (a secret gift selected by PR each month) or by pixieing the "Exemplary Member of the Month" (also a secret member selected by the PR), and to enter - all you have to do is post your username and your pixie thread on the Pixie Appreciation Contest thread. At the end of that month, the current hostess (the Queen and Princess take it in turns to host the contest and fund the prizes) will announce the winners and hand out the prizes!
Prizes in the past have included beautiful faerie furniture, plushies, petpets and on one lucky occasion even petpet paint brushes! Only pixies are allowed to enter but all pixie deeds could be the right gift or person!
If you want to advertise the Pixie Appreciation Contest, you can find several cool buttons (like the one below) on the PAC ReMiXeD thread! (and thanks!).
How do I donate to the Pixie Nobility?
There's almost always something going on in the Gathering, from the monthly Pixie Appreciation Contest to the Uber Pixies' quests to one-off events like the Grand Pixie Ball. The Pixie Nobility spend a great deal of their own neopoints on these events for prizes and little thank-you gifts for our wonderful pixies but sometimes donations can help make the Gathering's activities even bigger and better.
If you'd like to donate, why not stop by Princess Terra's shop where you can buy a starry notebook and know that the proceeds will go towards future events in the Pixie Gathering. You can also always neomail her if setting up a trade would be easier ^_^
